The Southern Arizona Chapter’s 2011-2012 season encompasses concerts, educational events and social gatherings.  Please note these dates on your calendars and spread the word to your friends and colleagues!  These are opportunities you don’t want to miss.  Click Here to download a pdf version of the program.

Opening Program
Sunday, September 18, 3 p.m., Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 E. University Blvd.
The Chapter honors the late David McDowell, longtime Tucson organ builder.  Guild members Dusty Johnson, Mary Frances Fest, Alan Schultz, and David Wachter will give short presentations on David McDowell’s lifetime achievements for the organ.  Lynn Moser and David Wachter will play short pieces on the McDowell pipe organ at Trinity Presbyterian, including the premier of a work by Alan Schultz dedicated to David McDowell.  This will be followed by a potluck dessert and the showing of the film, “Pulling Out All the Stops”, which describes the history, development, manufacture, and extensive use of pipe organs around the world today.


Workshop: “Bringing Out the Best”
Saturday, October 15, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon., First United Methodist Church, 915 E. 4th St.
Organist Jeffrey Campbell, Dean of the Chapter, will discuss and demonstrate how to make the most of your instrument.  Participants will sing together four hymns in different styles, with some approaches to organ registration fundamentals as well as suggestions for registrations.  Jeffrey will also play several chorale preludes to show possibilities on smaller instruments.


Showcase Recital
Sunday, November 20, 3 p.m., Christ Church United Methodist, 655 N. Craycroft Road.
The AGO’s annual Showcase Recital will feature Jeffri Sanders, harpsichord, and organists David Gay and Carolyn Smith will perform on the 1980 41-rank, three manual Schlicker organ.
Reception following.
Suggested donation: $10.


“Carols and Cadenzas” Post-Christmas Gathering
Sunday, January 8, 2012, 4 p.m.
AGO members are invited to the home of Derek Redmore for a New Year’s celebration and potluck supper.  Members are urged to bring their favorite CD’s and/or music to play. Reservations should be made to Joyce Swinehart, joyceehart@gmail.com, by Wednesday, January 4.


“Duo Wong-Chen” Concert
Sunday, February 26, 2012, 3 p.m., Northminster Presbyterian Church, Tucson Blvd. and Ft. Lowell Rd.
Features Chelsea Chen, organ, and Lewis Wong, violin.  Chelsea will play the Roy A. Johnson Memorial 46-rank, three manual 1998 Quimby pipe organ.  A reception will follow. http://chelseachen.com/


Choral Workshop
Saturday, April 14, 2012, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon., Catalina United Methodist Church, 2700 E. Speedway Blvd.
Elizabeth Schauer, Associate Director of Choral Activities at the U of A, will present a workshop aimed at smaller choirs.  The workshop is primarily for directors, organists and pianists, and interested choir members.  Light refreshments will follow.


“Libations and Librettos” Social Event
Sunday, June 3, 2012, 4 p.m.
AGO members are invited to wind up the season with a potluck supper at the home of Charlotte Cordes.  Members are invited to bring their favorite prelude, offertory, or postlude to play.

Chapter members Janet Tolman, John Brobeck, Dennis Grannan, and David Horr will each play 20-minute selections of J.S. Bach’s organ works on St. Philip’s 47-rank, three manual 1986 Holtkamp pipe organ.  Choral selections to be announced later.

Pumpkin Patch at El Con Mall.
Saturday and Sunday, October 29 & 30.
The Chapter will co-sponsor this event with the Tucson Girls’ Chorus.  It will include organ music for Halloween played by Chapter members.
